Historically growth in container turnover breaks several records at the Port of Aarhus

The growth of container traffic at Denmark's largest commercial port continues to new heights.
The month of July in particular resulted in exceptional numbers with growth of over 45 percent compared to last year. A growth from 59,726 TEU to 86,835 TEU (TEU = 20-foot containers)
This is the highest number of containers ever handled at the Port of Aarhus, where over 70 percent of all containers in Denmark pass through.
The impressive figures come on top of an already busy first six months of 2025, when overall container traffic has grown by more than 13 percent compared to last year.
The container growth is a result of Aarhus Port’s strong route network, which has been further strengthened with new routes in 2025., the geopolitical situation, and the fact that Aarhus is increasingly used as a strategically important hub for container cargo to the rest of Europe.
However, the increase in container turnover is also putting pressure on port capacity, and a three-year-old record for number of containers handled in a week was broken back in week 22 with 19,127 TEUs in seven days. A record that has now again been broken with 20,212 TEUs handled in Week 29.
“We are pleased that the trend of significant growth in freight turnover continues. Our already strong route network has been expanded with new routes and vessels at the same time that the geopolitical situation sends more containers to Aarhus, and we increasingly see that Aarhus is an important hub for container cargo to the rest of Europe,” says Thomas Haber Borch and continues:
“The large volumes of cargo require a lot from the terminal operator, the companies at the port and our employees. This puts additional pressure on our available space, but through a joint effort we can deliver exceptionally high efficiency and competitive operations that support Danish business and supply security.”
The many containers also come with more container ships. In July, 53 container ships entered the port of Aarhus. That's 32 percent more container ships compared with July last year.

In 2025, the Port of Aarhus has so far become a new destination with a weekly call on the following routes:
· March 25: First arrival in Aarhus on a new route made by Mærsk in cooperation with the German shipping company Hapaq-Lloyd. The route is an extension of the global routes that call at the major ports in northern Germany.
· April 1: First stop on yet another new Mærsk route. On this route, the world's first methanol-powered ship, Laura Mærsk, will sail to Aarhus every week. This route also serves as an extension of the global routes with calls at the major North German ports.
· April 9: First call on a new direct route between Aarhus and Asia established by MSC, the world's largest container shipping company. The weekly calls will be with container ships with a capacity of over 15,000 TEU.
· July 8: Mærsk announces that Aarhus will once again be part of one of their direct routes to Asia with weekly calls from some of their very largest container ships. Therefore, both Mærsk and MSc will now offer direct routes between Aarhus and Asia.
· July 8: Aarhus will have new destinations as an intermediate station for containers going to and from Poland on a so-called shuttle route that is part of the Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd route network.
· July 24: First arrival in Aarhus on a new route from the shipping company CMA CGM, which links Scandinavia and the Baltic countries closer together.
