Green Energy

In 2023, Denmark's first shore power facility for cruise ships was inaugurated at the Port of Aarhus. More shore power facilities are on the way.

Denmark's First Shore Power Facility for Cruise Ships

2023 marked the year when Denmark's first shore power facility for cruise ships was unveiled at the Port of Aarhus. Now, cruise ships can turn off their diesel engines and instead connect to the shore power facility, receiving green electricity from Danish wind turbines. This means, among other things, no more noise and local pollution when cruise ships are docked at the cruise terminal.

68%

of the cruise ships calling the dock connected to
shore power in 2024.

New fee to promote shore power

We aim to lead the way in the green transition. Therefore, we have introduced a new fee, making it more expensive for cruise ships docking at the cruise terminal and not connecting to shore power. It's about creating the right incentives to shift towards a greener direction.

The new fee means an additional charge of 0,75 DKK per gross tonnage for the cruise ships docking at the cruise terminal and opting out of shore power. This could result in an additional charge of between 50,000 – 75,000 DKK per cruise ship.

We will earmark the funds for new initiatives on our cruise areas aimed at green transition and sustainability.

More shore power coming to Aarhus

We also aim to enable container ships to connect to shore power when they dock at the Port of Aarhus.

Therefore, in collaboration with other Northern European ports, we have applied to the EU for funding to co-finance shore power facilities at the container terminal.

We have also applied for funding to explore the possibility of delivering shore power at various voltages, making it cheaper and therefore more attractive for smaller container ships to connect to shore power.

We expect container ships to be able to connect to shore power by the end of 2026.
