Cruise visitors spend over DKK 87 million in Aarhus

The cruise season is currently well underway in Aarhus, and a new study highlights the positive economic impact on both the city and the wider region.
The findings show that cruise passengers and crew members together spent more than DKK 87 million in Aarhus and on excursions out in the region in 2025.
The study, conducted by Kantar on behalf of Cruise Denmark, also reveals that more than half of all visitors spend money on foodand beverages or shopping, while one third spend money on different attractions.
On average, each cruise passenger spent DKK 380, while visiting crew members spent as much as DKK 824 per person.
“We are pleased to see that cruise visitors to Aarhus and the surrounding region help strengthen local trade, culture and the many experiences that make Aarhus an attractive destination. The fact that we expect cruise calls throughout the year in 2026 is particularly important, as it supports activity and turnover outside the peak tourist season and contributes to a more vibrant city life and a stronger local economy year-round,” says Ulrik Andersen, CEO of Port of Aarhus.
Ulrik Andersen further states that the Port of Aarhus also expects to receive cruise calls every month of the year in 2027.

More than one in three visitors plan to return to Aarhus
The fact that cruise ships call at a port does not necessarily mean that passengers go ashore. However, the study shows that 95% of passengers disembarked when visiting Aarhus in 2025.
Once in the city, visitor satisfaction is high. More than one in three cruise passengers indicate that they would like to return to Aarhus for a holiday within the next two to three years.
The vast majority would also recommend Aarhus as a destination to their friends and family.
“These figures are a strong endorsement of the city and everyone who contributes to ensuring a positive visitor experience. In particular, VisitAarhus deserves recognition for the important work they do in our joint efforts to deliver a high level of service and a strong first impression – both as a port and as a destination. Together, we help put Aarhus and the wider region on the international map,” says Ulrik Andersen.
In 2025, a total of 61 cruise ships called at Aarhus. In 2026, the number is expected to increase to 78 calls, with up to 257,000 passengers and crew members.
“We are experiencing growing interest in Aarhus as a cruise destination. We are therefore also pleased to see a strong willingness among cruise lines to use shore power, which helps eliminate engine noise and reduce local air pollution – to the benefit of both residents and visitors,” says Ulrik Andersen.
Port of Aarhus expects that up to 85% of cruise ships calling at the cruise terminal in 2026 will make use of the port’s shore power facilities.
