Container throughput grows in first quarter at Port of Aarhus

Port of Aarhus has had a strong start to 2026, with increasing cargo throughput in the first quarter.

A total of 2,483,074 tons of cargo were handled, an increase of over four percent compared to the same period last year.

Container throughput is a key driver of this growth. In the first quarter, 194,030 TEU (20-foot equivalent units) were shipped through the port of Aarhus.

This represents a 13 percent increase for the period.

- We added several new routes and vessels to our network during 2025, which has positively impacted our container throughput, especially in the first quarter of this year, says Ulrik Andersen, CEO of Port of Aarhus, adding:

- However, geopolitical circumstances create significant unpredictability for the rest of the year and have already impacted global supply chains and global trade in early 2026. Therefore, we anticipate a more uncertain next quarter. Nevertheless, we are pleased to be operating from a solid foundation, where we continue to gain market share and, in collaboration with the business community, can ensure efficient and secure supplies for Danish citizens and to the Danish business community, says Ulrik Andersen.

Part of the first quarter's container throughput growth can be attributed to transit containers, which also played a significant role in Port of Aarhus's exceptional container volumes in 2025.

In 2025, Port of Aarhus set a new record with a historically high container throughput of 843,665 TEU, an increase of nearly 28 percent compared to 2024.
